My other lifelong love has been art. I graduated in 1999 with an art degree from UNC. I thought about pursuing art school afterward, but decided to make the safe bet and enter the family business instead.
After buying the Camaro and beginning my new “project”, I discovered, through the work of Chip Foose and builders like Troy Trepanier, that my two lifelong interests actually have a lot in common.
I started paying attention to what design elements I like on some cars and what gives a car its character. Does it look fast, or elegant, sleek, or just plain mean? The lines and stance of a car convey an attitude, just like a painting evokes an emotion.
Shows like Overhaulin’ and Rides often magnify this relationship by following a car from the drawing board to completion. Seeing the work go from paper to the road is an amazing process.
I work in my dad’s sheet metal fabrication shop, so I truly appreciate the skill that it takes to make a piece of metal do what these guys can.
